James Abbott McNeill Whistler was an American-born, British-based artist. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic Movement, and his most famous painting is "Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1" (1871), commonly known as "Whistler's Mother." He was also a printmaker, and his etchings and lithographs remain popular today. Whistler was a master of tonal harmony, and his works often featured subtle gradations of colour and light.
