Jean-Leon Gerome was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker of the 19th century. He is considered one of the most important artists of the Orientalist school of art, depicting scenes from the Middle East and North Africa in detailed, realistic style. His works were highly sought after during his lifetime, and his prints remain popular today.
