Franz Xavier Winterhalter (1805-1873) was a German painter and lithographer who specialised in portraits of royalty and aristocrats. He was one of the most successful portrait painters of the 19th century and his works are highly sought after today. His paintings are characterised by a delicate blend of realism and idealisation, and his prints are admired for their masterful use of colour and light.
