Philip James de Loutherbourg (1740-1812) was a renowned 18th-century landscape painter and set designer. He was born in Switzerland, and moved to England in 1771. He was a master of the Romantic landscape style, and was known for his dramatic use of light and colour. His works were highly sought after by collectors, and his set designs for the Drury Lane Theater were praised for their grandeur.
