Emanuel Leutze (1816-1868) was a German-American painter best known for his iconic painting Washington Crossing the Delaware. He was born in Germany and studied painting in Düsseldorf before emigrating to America in 1825. Leutze was highly influential in the mid-19th century American art scene and his works are now celebrated for their historical and artistic importance. His paintings capture the spirit of the American Revolution and are considered some of the most significant works of American art.
