Martin Johnson Heade was an American painter known for his luminous landscapes and seascapes. He was a master of light and atmosphere, often depicting scenes of the tropics and the American Northeast. Heade's works sometimes feature hummingbirds and orchids, and he is also noted for his still lifes of shells and salt marsh landscapes. His works have been exhibited widely and are held in major public and private collections.
