Thomas Gainsborough

Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was a British painter and draughtsman, best known for his romanticised landscapes and portraiture. He was a major figure in the development of 18th-century British art and was a founder member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. His works are characterised by a free, expressive brushwork and a strong sense of atmosphere. His portraiture is particularly renowned and Gainsborough's work is celebrated around the world and can be found in many of the world's leading galleries and museums.
