Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a French Rococo painter renowned for his paintings of the fêtes galantes, or scenes of courtly love. His work is characterized by its graceful, elegant figures and its pastel palette of colours. He was a master of depicting the emotion of his figures, often conveying a sense of melancholy and wistfulness. His influence on later artists, such as Fragonard, was immense. Watteau's works continue to be admired and reproduced in fine art prints to this day.
