Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was a renowned Japanese artist of the Ukiyo-e school of woodblock prints and paintings. He is best known for his portraits of beautiful women, often with a wistful and dreamy expression on their faces. Utamaro's works are characterised by a delicate line and subtle use of colour, as well as a sensitivity to the emotional state of his subjects. His prints remain highly sought after and are collected worldwide.
