David Cox (1783-1859) was a British landscape painter and etcher. He was known for his detailed watercolour studies of the English countryside and his innovative use of etching techniques to capture the subtle gradations of tone and light in the natural world. His work was highly influential, inspiring many of the later Impressionist painters. He was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts and his work is still held in high regard today.
