George Catlin
1796 - 1872
George Catlin (1796-1872) was an American painter, author, and traveler who specialised in portraits of Native Americans. He was among the first white men to venture into the American West and document its native peoples. His works are known for their vibrant colours and attention to detail, and are a valuable record of the Native American way of life in the 19th century. His works are now prized by collectors and art lovers alike, and can be found in many of the world's finest museums.
