Joseph Stieler (1781-1858) was a German painter and lithographer best known for his iconic portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven. He was born in Mainz, Germany and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was a successful portrait painter of the German aristocracy, and his works were highly sought after by the European elite. He also produced a number of lithographs, which are now highly prized for their fine detail and craftsmanship.
