Jan Steen (1626-1679) was a Dutch Golden Age painter known for his lively, humorous genre scenes. He was a prolific painter, producing over 800 paintings, and his works are characterised by vivid colours and details. Steen often depicted scenes from everyday life, such as weddings, tavern scenes, and peasant life, and his works have been described as a celebration of life and the joy of living. His works are highly sought after, and they are still widely admired today for their masterful use of colour and composition.
