Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) was an important German painter of the 18th century. He is best known for his grandiose Neoclassical frescoes and oil paintings, which were highly influential in the development of European art. His works are characterised by a classicising style, which is marked by a strong sense of harmony and order. He was also a skilled draftsman and his drawings are considered to be among the best of the period.
